RES Gives Back – Pajama & Book Drive Update!

Thanks to the amazing dedication of our RES PTA volunteers and the tremendous and generous response from our RES community, we are happy to report the success of our 2018 Pajama and Book Drive! This effort helps make bedtimes a little cozier for less fortunate kids in our region by sharing new pajamas and favorite new books with them. This year we collected 82 pairs of pajamas for girls and 83 for boys, and we also are donating 87 new books to go with them. We are so grateful to be part of such a generous community!

A Message From Our President: Fairfield Day of Giving.

Below is a special message from our RES PTA President, Lisa Goldstein, in honor of Fairfield County Giving Day on March 1, 2018.

Hello RES PTA Families –

We wanted to let you know that tomorrowMarch 1, is Fairfield County’s Giving Day.  What does that mean?  It’s a one day event for the people in and around our community to show our collective support for organizations that make a difference in our lives.  The idea started more than 20 years ago when five smaller non-profits got together to promote philanthropy as a means to create change in Fairfield County.  It has now grown to the point that last year alone, this amazing day of giving raised $1,465,246 donated by 13,718 individuals for 414 nonprofits.

While we are not formally participating in the event, we wanted to take this opportunity to support some of the organizations right here in Redding that provide incredible resources and activities for our kids, our families and our community.  If you would like to make a donation, we are sure they would greatly appreciate your support!

RES Gives Back – 2018 Pajama & Book Drive!

Don’t forget one of our big spring charitable collections for our wider community, the Pajama & Book Drive. We ask our RES families to send in a new pair of pajamas and a new book to help a child in need enjoy a comfortable, cozy story time. We are proud to partner with community organizations to help our RES students learn to share their good fortune.

The details: on MARCH 2 (this Friday!) send in the pajamas and book in a bag, labeled with the gender/size information. You should look for pajamas in sizes 5-12. If you would like to benefit the RES PTA with your purchase, use the Amazon Smile program and select Redding Elementary School PTA as your benefiting charity!

SOUPer Bowl victory!

While your team may not have made the Super Bowl this year, RES kindness won our 1st annual SOUPer Bowl — a collection of non-perishable goods our PTA families did for the Redding Food Pantry on the Friday before the big game. A big cheer of thanks to our organizers and all who participated!

Attitude of Gratitude: Giving a Love of Reading.

We have been talking a lot about the excesses of the holiday season and how it impacts our kids here and on our Facebook page. Has it left you looking for a new holiday tradition that’s less about presents and more about presence? Maybe this is a year to try Jolabokaflod!

Jolabokaflod is an Icelandic Christmas Eve tradition, and the name means “Yule book flood.” It involves opening gifts of books on Christmas Eve and staying up to read together. Even if Christmas isn’t part of your family’s tradition, it would be easy to adapt this into a winter celebration, perhaps around Winter Solstice or New Year’s Eve. What a great way to spend time together and give a meaningful, special gift that can help stoke a love of reading! And shopping with your kids for book gifts for loved ones you can include in this tradition will be a wonderful way to promote gratitude and learning about others.

Want to find out more about Jolabokaflod and get ways to include your kids? You can read more here, here and here. What books would you recommend our RES PTA community give to loved ones this year? And don’t forget that you can purchase your books for the Jolabokaflod using our Amazon Smile link — just choose Redding Elementary School PTA as your charity!
